December 2007 / February 2008December 2007 / February 2008Switch Mode Power Supplies Apart from a few specific applications met only by ‘linear’ types, Switch Modes are now the dominant power supply technology in production. This has been driven by the trend towards miniaturisation, portability and operational efficiency. The benefits of Switch Modes have meant the virtual elimination of the bulky step-down transformer/series regulator type linears. These have been replaced with ‘pulse width modulated’, high frequency power supplies capable of converting mains supply voltages world-wide down to useable, well-regulated DC power for a wide range of applications.
